Woven Coast

NORFOLK, 2023
The Woven Coast was derived through locality, looking to North Norfolk’s landscape and materials not only for inspiration but as tools for making.

Working with region-specific materials, my intention was to explore materials that speak to the value of local textile production. For the project, I met with and sourced from local farmers, wool suppliers and Norfolk-based makers.

The project reflects the materials of North Norfolk through handcrafted and traditional techniques. Growing up in Norfolk and spending time in places such as Hunstanton and Holkham, I developed a deep connection to the coastal landscape.

These seaside areas, rich in colour and texture continue to inspire my work, which aims to celebrate the natural beauty and heritage of the region.
The Woven Coast focused on dyeing techniques and single cloth woven structures inspired by the uneven landscape and sea. I developed twills woven in uneven blocks with no repeat across the width of the sample.
Textile artworks have been woven with Norfolk Horn wool and dyed with earth pigments, such as clay, sandstone and red chalk. The materials were inspired by the geology of Hunstanton’s cliffs and foraged from Holkham.
