Earthen

MOROCCO, 2024
Earthen emerged from my time living and working in Marrakech, Morocco. Hand-made craft is deeply rooted in the culture of Marrakech, with artisans becoming masters of their work through generational knowledge.

With a focus on regional materials, I sourced wool and clay directly from local suppliers to create textiles that honoured Moroccan craftsmanship.
The project drew inspiration from the natural materials available in the surrounding areas of Marrakech, including Moroccan wool from the Atlas Mountains and red clay from Safi. My materials were locally sourced from a ceramics workshop and directly from artisans in the Medina.
Dyeing cotton and wool with clay and weaving on an 80cm rigid heddle loom, I created compositions that played with the natural colour of the base material and the pink hues of the clay.
